Bee populations

Poppe Braam and Gerard van de Braak of De Valksche Hof have been working together for many years. Together they placed the first bee colonies on the Harselaar Barneveld industrial area.
At the time, a complete novelty. After the purchase of the office-farm in Voorthuizen, some hives were placed on the premises of DIT-IT in early 2021. Five hives were placed, which could immediately take care of the pollination of the fruit blossoms. They also pollinated the sown buckwheat.

Jersey Bulls

The Jersey is a small stubborn cow that gives extra full and tasty milk with more fat and protein than other dairy cows.Due to the somewhat frail build of these animals, the (bull) calves ofJersey dairy cows have a lower birth weight and little predisposition to put on (a lot of) meat.

‍Thismakes them not interesting for the meat calf trade. "That's a shame, because we believe that bull calves should absolutely not be a waste product. In order to give milk, a cow must give birth to a calf once a year, and so it is inevitable that bull calves will also be born. Fifty percent of calves born are bull calves. "

Symfonio

The SYMFONIO project supplies organic fonio from Burkina Faso and the Sahel region. The aim of SYMFONIO is to provide farmers with sufficient yields for their own consumption and a surplus for export, through the production of nutritious crops.

The cultivation of fonio combats desertification and erosion and can even make desert soil fertile again.

Lucky Bird

Lucky Bird is a poultry farming concept where the chickens and roosters are kept in movable carts, so-called chicken coops on wheels. The chicken cart is moved at least once a week to a fresh patch of grass to keep the soil life in optimal condition. The chickens and roosters are kept in organic fields and fed with organic grass, herbs and feed. The cart is equipped with solar panels. The organic eggs are packed in recyclable cardboard boxes and sold in organic food stores. This is a completely natural cycle from egg to egg.

Biorganica

In 2007, a group of small organic soybean farmers started BIORGANICA to grow organic products in the state of Parana in Brazil, for local use and export. It is FairTrade IBD-certified to meet social, environmental and economic needs and to connect farmers and producers. The main export crops are soy, cassava and sugar. The farmers and producers are supported with organic and technical advice and with assistance in exporting their products. For the local market, the development of organic consumer products is supported.

Het Wilde Noorden

Het Wilde Noorden is a space in which organic experiments are made possible. There is a so-called Mancave where roosters are kept until they reach adulthood. A food forest is planned, and a flower meadow where the roosters and hens can hide, as well as a natural plant wall, an organic vegetable garden and other experiments by youngsters, because they are the next generation to keep our planet healthy.

Poppe Braam

Born and raised in Friesland, Poppe was already involved in organic farming and food during his student days in Groningen and was the first to start a certified organic chicken farm.

At the same time he set his sights on the world outside and came into contact with international organic companies. After the necessary experience he started DO-ITan international trading company in organic raw materials and consumer products based in Barneveld. The company is now one of the largest organic companies in the Netherlands. After more than 30 years of dedicated leadership of DO-IT, Poppe passed the baton at the end of 2020 to 2 entrepreneurs with a passion for organic agriculture and food.

Poppe cannot sit still, so his work continues with the many challenges and questions that the sector of organic agriculture and food poses. DID-IT B.V. is the basis for the resulting activities. Poppe and his team will be able to continue to contribute to the important transition of a sustainable, organic agriculture and food sector in the Netherlands and other countries. The European Green Deal also poses major challenges for the production and marketing of organic food.

Johannes Fontanus College and sustainability.

On Wednesday, February 22, the students of VWO class 5 of the JFC in Barneveld were guests of DID-IT.

Like last year, the 32 students had worked on sustainability projects in 9 groups of 3-4 students.

At the meeting loft at DID-IT's farm, the students were welcomed and first given an introduction about the history of DID-IT and its activities such as bull calves, hens and roosters, bees and other projects.

Then half of the students were given a tour by Kobe Schoofs, one of the farm's residents who himself advises businesses on sustainability, and was able to show how some DIDIT projects are implemented in practice.

The other half presented their finished projects in groups. Then that half switched for a tour while the other students got to show their sustainability advice again. More....
